The Shelf Life of a Build (and Why That’s a Win-Win)

I recently expanded my workspace for the dozenth time. I initially wanted a raw slab of native Puerto Rican wood, but the physics were too complex—fresh wood warps, sags, and requires constant maintenance. I opted for the practical path: a 74” plywood slab reinforced with a steel spine.

It’s a solid build, but it reminded me of a hard truth: no desk is meant to be static. It serves a purpose, adapts, and eventually gives way to something new.

For years, I tied my professional value to tenure. I once spent six years at one job, navigating two rebrands that felt like remodeling a house while living in it. By the second iteration, the creative exhaustion was real. When a mass layoff eventually hit, it wasn’t just a release; it was the demolition needed to clear the way for a new build.

That’s when I realized every project and role has a prime value window—a shelf life. This insight led me to fractional work, a win-win model built for impact over endurance.
